Jie Zhou’s paintings draw on a lifelong connection with water, architecture, and the rhythms of everyday life. Raised by his grandmother in Suzhou, China, he remembers a landscape of canals, stone bridges, white walls, and dark roofs—images that continue to inform his artistic outlook.
In his artist statement, Zhou describes a palette shaped by the restrained greys of childhood and the more vivid colors he encountered in adulthood. He is moved by people living and working together, and by the meeting of cultures, which he likens to a dance.
