A charming Steinlen image of a blonde girl in a flowing red dress, seated on a cane chair and lifting a patterned bowl of milk to her lips. Three expectant cats—a striped tabby, a sleek black cat, and a calico—gather at her feet, their upward gazes giving the quiet scene its gentle humor. The bold red dress, warm ochre ground, and expressive feline silhouettes capture the warmth and graphic simplicity of Steinlen’s Art Nouveau work.
Published by Shorewood Reproductions Inc., New York, and identified in the lower margin as Girl and Kittens, catalog no. 1429. The composition derives from Steinlen’s celebrated milk-advertising imagery. His signature and the Charles Verneau printer’s line appear within the printed image. The printing date of this copy has not been established. Unframed poster on paper.
Condition: Noticeable creasing and surface abrasion in the upper-left white margin, abrasion along the lower margin, and edge and corner wear. Please see the full-sheet and detail photos for condition.
