About the artist
Jay Ryan learned screen printing with Steve Walters at Chicago’s Screwball Press beginning in 1995 and founded The Bird Machine in 1999. His practice grew from posters for his own band, friends’ bands and local music venues into a distinctive body of hand-drawn, screen-printed work. Animal imagery, expressive lettering and offbeat humor are central to his visual language. He served as vice president of the American Poster Institute from 2002 to 2007.
